How We Test Bottles

Our Bottle Fit Lab is built to reduce guesswork. We combine controlled, repeatable lab measurements with real-world caregiver diaries to answer the questions that matter: Will my baby accept it? Does the flow match the label? Will it leak, warp, or take forever to clean? And will it fit the gear we already own?

Lab Protocols

  • Flow-Rate Benchmarking: We measure effective flow (mL/min) across labeled nipple sizes using calibrated rigs, temperature-controlled water, and standardized suction profiles. We report variability and confidence ranges.
  • Leak and Drop Checks: We test sealed bottles at various fill levels, orientations, and simulated transport. We document gasket/vent failure modes and drip rates.
  • Heat and Hold: We track warm-up time in common warmers and heat distribution in the bottle body and nipple. We log how long target temps are maintained and flag hotspots.
  • Cleanability: We time disassembly, brush reach to contact surfaces, and dishwasher cycles. We inspect for milk film, valve traps, and post-wash warping.
  • Durability and Markings: We inspect volume-mark accuracy, fade resistance after repeated washes, and thread wear.

Caregiver Diaries

We run structured acceptance trials with diverse families (exclusive pumping, combo feeding, formula use, daycare). Diaries capture latch behavior, pacing, intake, gas/reflux cues, spit-up, feed duration, and caregiver workload. We aggregate patterns over time instead of relying on single-feed impressions.

Compatibility Mapping

We test cross-brand fit with popular pumps, adapters, warmers, sterilizers, and drying setups. We record thread patterns, ring/nipple interchangeability, and clearance in baskets/racks. The Fit Finder filters by material, neck type, vent design, parts count, and known compatibility so you can build a minimal kit that scales.

Scoring and Transparency

We weight categories by real-world impact: acceptance and flow accuracy carry the most weight, followed by leak resistance and cleanability, then durability and markings. Each score links to methods, raw notes, and limits. If data changes (new nipple molds, design revisions), we update pages with a "Last reviewed" date.

Testing informs—not replaces—clinical guidance. For medical concerns, consult your pediatrician or an IBCLC.
